This listing is for a wooden Akebono-nuri lacquerware tray made around 50 years ago.  Akebono-nuri is a technique in which black lacquer is applied to the top coat and then polished to bring out the vermillion lacquer of the middle coat.  Basically it is the opposite of Negoro-nuri.  Generally Akebono-nuri pieces aren’t decorated with motifs or makie, it’s simple in appearance and suitable for all seasons.  There are three trays available, contact me if you would like more than one.  *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE BOWLS IN THE FIRST PHOTO ARE NOT INCLUDED.

Urushi lacquerware refers to products that have been coated in natural lacquer collected from urushi trees. The process for lacquering items is long and very labour intensive, each item requiring multiple layers of lacquer that may take anywhere from six months to two years to complete. Heat and humidity are required to dry lacquer evenly and consistently, so Japan’s rainy season and summer months are ideal for this process. Urushi products are not only beautiful but also strong.
