This listing is for a pair of wood-fired Bizen-ware beer cups made around 5 years ago by Andou Yoshinori. They are wheel-thrown and made with high-fired stoneware clay.  Both cups are blackened from the firing process, and they feature a band of gold around the rim.  Each cup has a capacity of 275ml.

Andou Yoshinori (b.1973) is a Mie based potter and current master of Studio Nao.  He graduated from Aichi Prefectural Seto Kiln High School and studied under Banko-ware potter Kumamoto Eiji (b.1962).  Andou was inspired to become a potter after using a wheel as a child.  He creates warm vessels that capture the earthiness of the local clay, and he designs pieces that harmonize with what is being served going beyond their utilitarian role.  His work is a mix of Bizen and Shigaraki, however he considers himself a Banko-ware potter.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Bizen-ware is generally known for its iron-like hardness, simple unglazed texture, and distinctive markings resulting from wood-burning kiln firing. Because of the clay composition, Bizen pottery is fired slowly over a long period of time. Firings take place only once or twice a year. They require the wood fire to be kept burning for 10-14 days, which involves long hours and tonnes of wood. Bizen clay is dug up from rice fields and this iron rich clay is what gives most Bizen-ware its dark colours, though, a few potters prefer to use lighter mountain clay.
