This listing is for a small antique ‘choshi ire’ dated Meiji 30 (1897).  A choshi ire is a small box for storing an omiki ritual sake bottle.  Omiki is an offering of sake to the gods in order to communicate with them, or to pray for bountiful harvests. The box is made of lacquered wood and has kanji written on each side.  The kanji in the very first photo says ‘choshi ire’, the second and third photo reads as ‘omiki’, the left side of the sixth photo includes the date (December, Meiji 30), and the right side of the sixth photo says ‘omiki choshi ire’.  This particular box came from an old house in Niigata. It’s still in very usable condition and would make a great piece of décor.
