This listing is for an antique Yamakawa Dou suichu water pot/kettle made around 100-120 years ago.  It is made of copper plated tin and the front is decorated with a landscape scene including thatched houses and hoisted fishing nets.  This particular kettle is not suitable for use due to a split in the side, and some sort of lacquer has been applied on the interior.  This piece is best used as a display item in a tea room or on something like an old sideboard.  It would also make great décor for a café or restaurant.  The Yamakawa Dou mark can be found under the spout, please scroll down and read more about the condition of the item below.

Yamakawa Dou is refers to uchimono pieces produced in the Tsubame-Sanjo district in Niigata.  Tsubame-Sanjo is famous for its manufacturing of hand hammered metal crafts and sharp-edged tools for artisans.  Uchimono is in reference to a basic metalwork technique for hammering out a metal lump with a metal or wooden hammer, beating a metal sheet thin from the front and back, or pressing metal to give it form.  Yamakawa Dou suichi kettles are becoming increasingly rare these days due to the dwindling number of artisans in the area.  This is driving up the prices of Yamakawa Dou products, even kettles that need repairing are being sought after by collectors.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

THIS KETTLE IS FOR DISPLAY ONLY.  The exterior has been brushed with something like matte lacquer, and the interior has also been lacquered at some point.  It has a visible split on the interior, it’s almost impossible to see from the exterior but it’s definitely there (see photos 8 and 9 with the red circle).  The rim of the lid is bent, and the knob on the lid is loose and wobbly.  This piece is decorative and not for use.
