This listing is for a splendid double lid Satsuma-ware chaire with shifuku made around 30 years ago by Ariyama Reiseki III. It is wheel-thrown and the exterior features nuka celadon glaze and dark syrupy glaze over a creamy coloured base. It is made of high-fired stoneware, and the caddy has a katatsuki shape. The lid has been lined with gold foil, and this allows the lid the fit closely into the opening on the chaire. The gold foil is important because it does not corrode like other materials do. The shifuku pouch is actually to protect the tea, not the chaire. Its purpose is to put pressure on the lid and hold it into place once the drawstring is tied over the top. The shifuku in this listing is decorated with a vertical stripe pattern, and has a dark blue/purple drawstring. Reiseki’s stamp can be found on the bottom of the chaire, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box. It also comes with two Japanese language profile papers.
Ariyama Reiseki (b.1949) is a Satsuma-ware potter and third generation master of Chotaro Gama. Chotaro Gama has a history of 120 years after it was built by Ariyama Chotaro, an Oniwa-ware potter for the Shimazu clan of the Satsuma domain. Reiseki continues to use traditional techniques handed down from previous generations, and his two sons are also potters. During his career Reiseki has exhibited at several high profile exhibitions. His work has been selected for the prestigious Nitten Fine Arts Exhibition 26 times, and he received a special invitation to exhibit at the Kagoshima Ceramic Art Exhibition. He was selected as a commissioned artist for the Southern Japan Art Exhibition, and he was designated as an Outstanding Craftsperson of Kagoshima Prefecture. He was also certified as a Traditional Craftsperson of Satsuma-ware, and he served as a judge at the Japan New Crafts Exhibition on three occasions. He was also selected to judge at the Kagoshima Prefectural Art Exhibition ten times, and he received the Special Crafts Award at the Kofu Association Exhibition. He received the Grand Prize at the Kyushu New Crafts Exhibition two times, and the Prime Ministers Award at the Kagoshima Ceramic Art Exhibition. His work was purchased by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at two exhibitions, and his work was also purchased by Kagoshima Prefecture two times. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
Satsuma-ware refers to pottery produced in Kagoshima Prefecture in Kyushu. It comes in two varieties: Shiro Satsuma-ware (white or ivory coloured) and Kuro Satsuma-ware (black or brown). Shiro Satsuma was originally produced for the lords of the Satsuma han, whereas Kuro Satsuma was produced for daily use. Kuro Satsuma is not as elegant however it conveys simple warmth much like Mashiko-ware.
