This listing is for a vintage futaoki made around 60 years ago. A futaoki functions as a lid rest during the tea ceremony. The lid of the kama is placed on the futaoki when hot water needs to be drawn from the kettle. The bamboo water ladle rests there up until the lid of the kama is removed. The futaoki featured in this listing is made of bamboo and features a plump radish and a cricket.  Long ago farmers used crickets as a symbol of the growing season.  When crickets appeared it was time to plant crops, and when they disappeared in the autumn it was time to harvest.  Crickets were generally regarded as a sign of summer in both China and Japan.  There’s writing on the back which may or may not be a signature, it’s too difficult to read.
