This listing is for a rather large and HEAVY okimono made around 60 years ago.  It is made of cast iron and depicts Ebisu sitting atop a sea bream.  Ebisu is one of the seven gods of fortune, known as Shichifukujin in Japanese. Ebisu is a favourite amongst merchants, caterers, farmers and other tradesmen. He usually is depicted wearing a pointed hat and has a large fish like a sea bream dangling from a fishing rod or under his arm. Sea bream also has symbolic importance in Japan, it is a fish for celebration and eaten at New Year. The Japanese name for sea bream is ‘tai’, which is part of the word ‘medetai’ which means auspicious and joyful. Also seam bream turns bright red when it’s cooked, and red is a lucky colour that is thought to ward off evil.  This piece is quite heavy, please contact us if you would like to upgrade to EMS Express, otherwise it will ship via sea mail.

Japanese okimono figurines are decorative items used for display purposes. Junishi okimono are those commemorating the twelve animals and mythological beasts from the astrological calendar. The Japanese astrological calendar is known as eto, and the twelve creatures are called junishi. The Zodiac’s popularity peaked during the Edo Era, and it was then that junishi okimono production became more widespread. These days, potters and production kilns produce hundreds of junishi each year to welcome the coming New Year. These are often displayed in shops, restaurants, people’s homes, and in tea rooms.

Size

H.37cm (14.5”) x 21.5cm (8.4”) across x 23cm (9”) from back to front

Condition

It’s in pretty good condition overall aside from some scratches, scuffing, and enamel loss.  Ebisu has two points on the bottom that slot into the fish, so most of the wear is in this area.
