This listing is for a pale celadon glaze plate made around 50 years ago.  It is made of porcelain and features a hawk perched on a branch with some flowers.  Hawks are an auspicious symbol connected to New Year. If your first dream in January features Mt. Fuji, a hawk, and an eggplant, you will be blessed with good luck throughout the year. The back of the plate is coated in glossy brown glaze, and there are two holes enabling the plate to be hung on the wall (no string sorry, seems that’s long gone).  The signature of the potter can be found on the back. 

Celadon refers to a type of glaze as well as a specific type of ware, both are characterized by a very pale green, powder blue, or grey-blue colour. The colour largely depends on the presence of iron in the clay and of iron oxide, manganese oxide, and quartz particles in the glaze. Firing conditions in the kiln also play a big role in determining colour.
