This listing is for a set of five Kiyomizu-ware tea cups made around 10 years ago by Chikuhou Gama.  They are made of porcelain and decorated with an ‘ami’ net pattern.  The ami pattern is a series of interlocking lines made to resemble a fishing net.  It is commonly found on pottery and textiles, and although primitive in its origins, is still very popular today.  The cups in this listing are thin walled and lightweight, and the signature of the kiln can be found on the bottom.  They also come with their original signed wooden storage box.

Chikuhou Gama is a 100-year-old Kiyomizu-ware pottery kiln in Kyoto.  The first generation Chikuhou hailed from Echizen in Fukui Prefecture.  Aiming to become a potter, he moved to Kyoto in 1909 and trained at various Kyoto ware kilns.  In 1920 he became independent and built Chikuhou Gama in Higashiyama Ward.  Since then, four generations have passed on traditional techniques from one generation to the next.  Chikuhou’s wares are characterized by their lightweight due to their thin construction. There mainly produce blue and white and overglaze porcelain pieces, and they specialise in tableware.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Kiyomizu-ware refers to a type or variation of Kyo-ware. Nonomura Ninsei is regarded as one of the key figures responsible for the development of the beautiful Kiyomizu-ware style that we know today. He produced tea utensils and mastered the secret technique for hand-painting overglaze enamels to look like brocade. This technique is very highly regarded and ranks up there with the finest Kutani-ware and Imari.
