This listing is for a black bamboo chasen produced for Chikumeido.  The chasen is tulip shaped and split from one piece of bamboo into 100 small prongs.  Chasen tend to have either 80 or 100 tines, the 100 tine type are considered to be better because more prongs result in more foam and a better frothy texture.  It comes with a plastic storage case, please note that this particular whisk is produced at Chikumeido’s workshop in China.

Chikumeido are producers of high quality chasen in Ikoma city, Nara.  They have been making tea whisks for over 500 years and the family workshop is now headed by the 24^th and 25^th generation masters.  The previous head of the family was honoured to make tea whisks in front of the emperor at the Nara National Athletic Meet.  In 1987 Chikumeido received certification as traditional craftspeople by the Minister of International Trade and Industry, and in 1999 they received the Minister of International Trade and Industry Award.  In 2008 they exhibited at the Louvre Palace Museum, and one year later they were awarded as one of the “300 Vibrant Manufacturing Companies” by the Director General of the Small and Medium Enterprise Agency.  In 2014 they participated in the Japan Expo pavilion in Paris where they gave demonstrations for many visitors from around the world.  Chikumeido also has a workshop in China where they produce tea whisks for casual use and tea school practice.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Condition

It’s a brand new, unused item.  There are individual differences between whisks, for example some of the prongs are darker in colour or are variegated in colour (please see photo 6).
