This listing is for a double gourd hyotan ikebana basket made around 70 years ago. Hyotan ikebana baskets are inspired by nature considered a utilitarian form of art. Thin strips of split bamboo have been skilfully woven then lacquered, and the gourd basket is cradled in a gnarled root wood base. The basket is in good working condition and is beautiful enough to be displayed on its own.

Condition

Overall it’s in pretty good condition for its age.  There’s a lot of dust build up, some bark is peeling from the root wood base, the basket is attached to the root with wire on one side, some white spots here and there, and the basket is a little loose in the root base (especially at the top).  Structurally it’s very sound and in very usable condition.  Unfortunately there is no insert for holding flowers.
