This listing is for a Tsubame pure copper chazutsu tea caddy made around 10-20 years ago by Echigo Bikodou.  It is made from a sheet of hammered copper and has a beautiful purple exterior.  The lid is decorated with a crane and tortoise, both of which are believed to live to 1000 years, thus making them auspicious symbols representing longevity.  It comes with its original signed wooden storage box.

Echigo Bikodou is a Niigata based producer of ‘tsuiki’ hammered copperware in the metalworking district of Tsubame town.  Their products are handcrafted and made using traditional techniques unique to the local area.  Moulds are used for some parts, and their beautiful range of colours is achieved through a very technical finishing method involving oxidisation.  Echigo Bikodou receives high praise for their artistic yet practical approach to producing copperware products that can be used on a daily basis.  Their wares are durable and guaranteed to last a lifetime.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Tsubame tsuiki copperware refers to metalware made in Tsubame-Sanjo district in Niigata Prefecture.  Tsubame-Sanjo is famous for its manufacturing of hand hammered metal crafts and sharp-edged tools for artisans.  During the Edo period copper was mined in the local area and this led to the production of everyday items such as pots and pans.  Tsubame products were then showcased overseas during the 1873 Exposition in Vienna.  Tsubame tsuiki copperware was designated as a traditional craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry in 1981.
