This listing is for a Yuzen-dyed fukusa cloth made around 20 years ago. A fukusa is a square silk cloth used for purifying tea utensils during the tea ceremony.  The fukusa in this listing is made of double layer silk, and features a printed version of ‘Fuji-san’ by Buddhist monk Shimizu Kosho (1911-1999). The handwriting on the bottom of the paper box says it was purchased at Koto-in Temple, a sub-temple of Daitokuji Temple in Kyoto.  Daitokuji Temple became closely linked to tea master Sen no Rikyu, thus establishing a link between Daitokuji and the Japanese tea ceremony. Rikyu’s tombstone can be found at Daitokuji, as well as a splendid tea room that he designed.

Yuzen-zome refers to painting dye on cloth, and it dates back to the middle of the Edo period.  Yuzen dyeing is probably best known for its clean lines and colour gradients.  The dyes are water resistant and designs usually reflect the changing seasons.  Traditionally Yuzen-zome involved up to 26 steps, gradually simpler methods were introduced such as textile printing and pattern painting.  It is possible to join workshops in Kyoto and experience pattern painting, you can even paint your own fukusa at certain studios.
