This listing is for a set of five Fukagawa porcelain tea cups made around 10 years ago.  They are made of wheel-thrown porcelain and decorated with dainty cherry blossoms over a milky white base. The exterior features matching pink glaze, and the rims are trimmed with gold enamel.  The Fukagawa mark can be found on the bottom of each cup, and they come with a signed wooden storage box.  Fukagawa are the official purveyors to the Imperial Household Agency so you can be assured that these cups are of the highest quality.

Arita-ware refers to porcelain produced in the town of Arita in the southern island of Kyushu. In 1616 a Korean potter named Ri Sanpei discovered kaolin at Mt. Izumiyama, thus resulting in the birth of Japanese porcelain. Arita-ware is sometimes referred to as Imari-ware, and this is because export wares were shipped from the nearby port in Imari town. The Fukagawa family entered the porcelain trade after the first Fukagawa returned from war. He decided to become involved in a new trade and eventually in 1894 the trademark Mt. Fuji stamp was born. The quality of their porcelain is considered to be the finest in Japan, and this has earned them the honour of being the official purveyors to the Imperial Household Agency.
