This listing is for a splendid Onta-ware chawan made around 20-30 years ago by Hakuun Gama.  It is wheel-thrown and the flat hira type used during the summer season. Hira chawan are shallow bowls with low sides designed to cool tea down faster.  The bowl in this listing is coated in brown iron-based glaze, and it has a nice deep well shape for whisking.  The signature of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box. *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHASHAKU TEA SCOOP IS NOT INCLUDED.

Hakuun Gama is an Onta-ware/Koishiwara-ware kiln located in Hita city.  They primarily produce tableware and teaware, as well as platters and large sized jars known as tsubo.  Hakuun Gama uses the traditional method of purifying earth through a mill before it is turned into clay.  Rocks are sourced from the nearby hills and a special type of water mill crushes the raw material into powder.  The powder is then washed and purified several times before it’s dried.  The dried material is then processed into dark coloured clay and wares are high-fired in a wood kiln.  Hakuun pieces are usually decorated with a tobikanna chattering tool, however the chawan is a little more unusual and features a rich coating of iron glaze.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Onta-ware refers to pottery produced in the mountainous part of Hita City in Kyushu.  Traditional techniques include tobikanna (jumping iron), hakeme (brush decoration), kushikaki (comb-drawing), uchikake (glaze splashing) and nagashi (slip trailing).  Onta-ware generally consists of items for daily use such as teaware, crock pots, sake cups, tokkuri, bowls and plates.  There are ten kilns operating in the Hita area which are still using traditional techniques from its beginnings 300 years ago.
