This listing is for a beautiful Hagi-ware tea room vase made around 30-40 years ago by Hamanaka Gesson. It is wood-fired in a noborigama climbing kiln and coated in ‘biwa’ (loquat) glaze, and is intended to be hung on the wall. This piece doesn’t have a metal hook attached to the back, it is designed to slot onto a hook on the wall. The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.
Hamanaka Gesson (b. Shoji 1943) is a Hagi-ware potter and first generation master of Ooya Gama. He was born in Osaka but began living with his grandparents in Hagi after his father passed away. Hamanaka’s grandfather was a collector and this influenced his decision to become a potter. In 1962 he began studying under Yoshiga Taibi, he then became independent and built Ooya Gama in 1969. In 1971 he took the name ‘Gesson’ and he now works with his son Shiro and Shiro’s wife Takako. Oooya Gama has been renovated to include a café and studio and is very popular among visitors to Hagi. A very interesting and informative article about Hamanaka can be found here: https://asianartnewspaper.com/hamanaka-gesson-hagi-pottery/
Hagi-ware is a type of high-fired stoneware produced in Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is characterized by its rough clay, bumpy pitted surface, and generous coating of translucent white glaze. It is generally made of very porous clay which results in tiny crackles that absorb tea, so it’s important to soak Hagi-ware thoroughly before use. In time the tea deposits will seep into the glaze, creating a deeper tone. This is often considered a charming characteristic rather than a shortcoming, and it’s precisely the reason why Hagi-ware is so highly regarded in the world of Chado.
