This listing is for a Kiyomizu-ware chawan made around 20 years ago by female potter, Hanafusa Miho. It is wheel-thrown and the flat hira type used during the summer season. Hira chawan are shallow bowls with low sides designed to cool tea down faster. The front and interior of the bowl is decorated with a hand-painted asagao blossom and vine. Asagao are morning glory flowers and the Japanese name means ‘beauty in the morning’. Asagao were originally brought from China as medicinal herbs, however towards the end of the Edo period they became popular as decorative plants and have come to symbolise summer. The signature of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.
Hanafusa Miho (b.1958) is a female Kiyomizu-ware potter from Kyoto. In 1978 she graduated from a Kyoto Prefectural pottery school, and in 1981 she began studying the Ninsei-Kenzan painting technique under noted potter, Nakamura Yoshihisa (Tofuku Gama). In 1987 she became independent and opened a workshop in the Kiyomizu area. She has participated in several exhibitions, and is best known for her delicate and highly skilled Ninsei brushwork. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
Kiyomizu-ware refers to a type or variation of Kyo-ware. Nonomura Ninsei is regarded as one of the key figures responsible for the development of the beautiful Kiyomizu-ware style that we know today. He produced tea utensils and mastered the secret technique for hand-painting overglaze enamels to look like brocade. This technique is very highly regarded and ranks up there with the finest Kutani-ware and Imari.
