This listing is for a hand carved nezuko turtle box made around 20-30 years ago. The shell functions as a lid and can be popped off to store your most treasured items inside. It’s deep enough to hold keys, watches that lay flat, jewellery, and other small knick knacks. It has been carved from a single piece of wood and is made of nezuko cypress. Nezuko has a beautiful grain and is popular for carving masks, combs, toys, furniture and religious figures. 

Nezuko handicrafts are produced in the Kiso Valley area in Nagano.  In the mountains around Kiso there is a group of trees known as the Five Sacred Trees of Kiso.  The group consists of hinoki cypress, sawara cypress, asuhi cypress, koya maki (Japanese umbrella pine) and nezuko cypress.  They were classified as sacred because they were the most valuable trees during those times, in fact during feudal times common people were forbidden from cutting them down.  The Owari Domain controlled access to the forests, and the wood was used for temples and the homes of the wealthy.  These days the sacred tree species are used for all manner of crafts, trees that are hundreds of years old are specifically used for lacquerware products.  The turtle boxes were created because the trees in the forest grow slowly and have narrow rings, the pattern is similar to the shell of a turtle.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
