This listing is for a vintage Kiyomizu-ware chawan made around 30 years ago by Hashimoto Jogaku. It is wheel-thrown and the front is decorated with hand-painted cobalt coloured bamboo over a panel of white glaze.  Bamboo is known for being hardy and is considered to bring luck, and it was also a favourite of the great Kenzan Ogata.  This piece also features grey coloured glaze and has a slightly irregular shape.  The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.  It also comes with a turmeric coloured wrapping cloth for when the item is not in use.

Hashimoto Jogaku (1907-2003) was a Kyo-ware potter and first generation master of Narutaki Gama. Narutaki Gama was established in 1955, two years later he moved to the Gojozaka area and established a new kiln there. Jogaku was particularly well known for his splendid Ninsei-Kenzan style brushwork, and this skill was passed onto his son, noted potter Hashimoto Shiun. Shiun succeeded the family kiln in 2003 after Jogaku passed away. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Kiyomizu-ware refers to a type or variation of Kyo-ware. Nonomura Ninsei is regarded as one of the key figures responsible for the development of the beautiful Kiyomizu-ware style that we know today. He produced tea utensils and mastered the secret technique for hand-painting overglaze enamels to look like brocade. This technique is very highly regarded and ranks up there with the finest Kutani-ware and Imari.
