This listing is for a nezumi Shino yunomi made around 20-30 years ago by Hayashi Sozan III. It is wheel-thrown and coated in thick feldspar glaze, and it also features patches of red and grey. It’s suitable for daily use and comes with its original signed wooden storage box. I assume it was signed on the bottom but the signature has been covered by glaze. *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHASEN TEA WHISK IS NOT INCLUDED.
Hayashi Sozan III (b. Ryoji 1940) was the third generation master of Sozan Gama located in Gifu Prefecture. He primarily produced shino pieces, and his kiln is known for its high quality tableware. During his career his work has been selected for various national level exhibitions. In 1961 he received the Toki City Citizens Award for an Oribe glazed bowl, and in 1963 an ash glaze vessel was chosen for the 1st Asahi Ceramics Exhibition. In 1966 a blue and white sometsuke tea set was selected for the Japan New Craft Exhibition, and in 1974 he was invited to hold a solo exhibition at Maru Department Store in Gifu. From 1975-1977 he held solo exhibitions at the Yokohama Civic Art Gallery, and in 1984 a tsubo vase was selected for the 31st Traditional Japanese Crafts Exhibition. In 1985 another one of his tsubo vases was chosen for the 16th Ceramic Society Traditional Crafts Exhibition, and an aka-shino tsubo pot was selected for the 32nd Traditional Japanese Crafts Exhibition. In 1986 he exhibited an aka-shino tsubo pot at the 17th Tokai Traditional Craft Exhibition, and two years later another aka-shino tsubo pot was selected for the 19th Tokai Traditional Craft Exhibition. Finally, in 1991, Sozan was certified as a Traditional Craftsperson by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. He opened a small private gallery in Gifu, and Sozan Gama is now in its fourth generation headed by Sozan’s eldest son. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
Shino-ware is reputed to be Japan’s first white glaze, and it is made of feldspar mixed with clay, sometimes with a hint of rose underneath. It was first produced in the Mino Province which is now modern day Gifu Prefecture. The surface of Shino-ware is characterized by many pin holes, and iron oxide is used to create simple designs underneath the white Shino glaze. The likes of Toyozo Arakawa and Kageaki Kato are renowned for their contemporary style Shino-ware pieces.
Nezumi-shino refers to grey coloured Shino-ware. Shino pieces can be grey, red, or white; owing to how thick or thin the feldspar is applied, and also how the atmosphere of the kiln has affected the high iron content. The name nezumi comes from the Japanese word for mouse.
