This listing is for a superb Kiyomizu-ware chawan made around 20 years ago by Heian Hisashi.  It is wheel-thrown and the front is decorated with a splendid hand-painted depiction of a ripe eggplant.   The beloved eggplant holds special meaning in Japan, it is seen as particularly good luck if your first dream in the New Year includes Mt. Fuji, a hawk, and an eggplant. Also eggplants also happen to be one of Japan’s more popular summer vegetables, and this is because they are believed to have a cooling effect on the body.  This piece has a nice deep shape for whisking, and it sits nicely in the hand.  The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.  It also comes with a Japanese language profile paper about the potter, and an outer paper storage box to protect the wooden tomobako.  *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHASHAKU TEA SCOOP IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING.

Heian Hisashi (b.1958) is a Kiyomizu-ware potter and first generation master of Santoku Gama.  In 1983 he completed studies at the Kyoto Prefectural Ceramics Training Institute, and the following year he graduated from the Kyoto Municipal Industrial Research Institute where he specialised in studying enamel glazes and firing techniques.  From 1985, he started making pottery nearby Sennyuji Temple in Kyoto, naming his kiln Santoku Gama.  Frankly speaking Santoku Gama produces some of the best Kenzan style pieces on the market.  These are not mere reproductions, these are pieces that embody the spirit of potters and Rinpa painters dating back 17th century Kyoto. When viewing his work you are pulled into the seasons , and you are taken back in time.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Kiyomizu-ware refers to a type or variation of Kyo-ware. Nonomura Ninsei is regarded as one of the key figures responsible for the development of the beautiful Kiyomizu-ware style that we know today. He produced tea utensils and mastered the secret technique for hand-painting overglaze enamels to look like brocade. This technique is very highly regarded and ranks up there with the finest Kutani-ware and Imari.
