This listing is for a set of five VERY SMALL Agano-ware tea cups made around 20 years ago by Hiari Gama.  Each cup is wheel-thrown and the rims dipped in green-blue ryokusho glaze.  The mark of the kiln can be found on the bottom, please note that these cups are small, please check the measurements carefully before placing your order.

Hiari Gama opened during the Showa period and is now headed by the second generation master, Tsuruta Yutaka. The first generation was famous potter, Tsuruta Toyoki. Hiari Gama consists of a noborigama climbing kiln, and both generations are known for producing quality tableware and splendid tea ware. Tsuruta Toyoki won several awards for his exquisitely designed and hand-painted chawan and vases. The Hiari Gama stamp consists of three dots and a line, however both generations have their own distinctive signatures for their high end tea ware. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and cannot be used in your own listings.

Agano-ware refers to pottery produced in Fukuoka Prefecture, with its origins going back some 400 years. This type of ware is characterized by its thin walls and beautiful coloured glazes. There are around 15 different types of glazes, although Agano-ware is probably best known for its green-blue Ryokusho glaze. Kilns in and around the Tagawa district in Fukuoka also produce beautiful iron and white warajiro straw glazes. Agano pottery is a favourite amongst tea enthusiasts and was favoured by tea master Kabori Enshu.
