This listing is for a set of five Hida Shunkei Nuri chataku made around 20 years ago. They are lightweight and lacquered a beautiful deep caramel colour, and the wood base is visible through the lacquer coating.  The hardened lacquer exterior forms a highly protective coating that repels water and protects the material underneath from salt and oil.  These are ideal for serving sencha tea. 

Hida Shunkei Nuri refers to traditional lacquerware produced in the city of Takayama in the mountainous Hida area of Gifu Prefecture. It is characterized by its transparent lacquer allowing the natural beauty of the wood to be seen underneath. Typically Japanese lacquerware is red or black, however Hida Shunkei Nuri is known for its natural finish ranging from soft amber to a deep burnt caramel colour. Craftsmen who produce this particular type of lacquerware provide utensils of timeless beauty for everyday living as well as those for the tea ceremony. It is not uncommon to see Shunkei Nuri natsume at a tea ceremony gathering.

Condition

They’re in very good condition and appear unused, the paper box however is spotty on the interior.
