This listing is for a Hida Shunkei-nuri lacquerware tray made around 60-70 years ago.  It is made of wood and coated in caramel coloured lacquer. Trays raised on legs are called o-zen, traditionally they were small dining trays or tables. The height of o-zen depended on the rank or importance of the person, and it conveyed respect. The tray in this listing would have been a simple dining tray and may have been used to serve guests.

Hida Shunkei Nuri refers to traditional lacquerware produced in the city of Takayama in the mountainous Hida area of Gifu Prefecture. It is characterized by its transparent lacquer allowing the natural beauty of the wood to be seen underneath. Typically Japanese lacquerware is red or black, however Hida Shunkei Nuri is known for its natural finish ranging from soft golden to a deep burnt caramel colour. Craftsmen who produce this particular type of lacquerware provide utensils of timeless beauty for everyday living as well as those for the tea ceremony. It is not uncommon to see Shunkei Nuri natsume at a tea ceremony gathering.

Condition

Overall it’s in good condition aside from the following:  there’s a gap in the wood, scratches, scuffing, shallow dents, some discolouration/cloudiness, and patches of peeled lacquer.  There are light scratches and scuffing on the bottom, one of the “feet”can slide a little, and there’s a ‘hole’ on the bottom of one foot where there was possibly a knot of wood.  There’s also some wear along the edges and corners.
