This listing is for a high quality Takayama brand 80 tine chasen made in Nara Prefecture. The chasen is tulip shaped and split from one piece of bamboo into 80 small prongs. The handle of this particular chasen is thinner than usual and will fit most chasen zutsu.  Please note that chasen sold in paper boxes are firmly attached to one end, you need to very carefully but firmly remove it before use.  Some of the paper will be stuck on the bottom of the chasen, it can be easily removed after a short soak in warm water. **Please refer to the last photo to see the types of chasen we have available.  You will notice that the chasen in this listing has a much thinner handle than the regular type we sell.  You can also see a comparison of the regular and thin type in photo five.

Takayama refers to bamboo tea utensils produced in the Takayama district of Ikoma city in Nara Prefecture.  Local craftspeople have been producing bamboo tea utensils since the Muromachi period, and presently this area remains one of the leading producers of chasen in all of Japan.  Bamboo is sourced locally and utensils are produced by highly skilled certified artisans.  There are three types of bamboo – white, black and susutake soot bamboo.  After bamboo is cut its dried for around 2 years before it is crafted into utensils.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
