This listing is for a set of five wood-fired tea cups made around 40-50 years ago by Horikawa Kyohei.  They are wheel-thrown and feature red streaks known as hidasuki. Hidasuki refers to the process of wrapping wares with cords of straw, which are then fired off resulting brilliant shades of red. These cups are durable and very well suited to daily use. They come with their original paper storage box as well as a Japanese language profile paper about Bizen-ware.

Horikawa Kyohei (1925-1987) was a Bizen-ware potter and first generation master of Koraku Gama.  He studied under Suzuki Osai (1908-1972) and built a noborigama climbing kiln after becoming independent.  Horikawa mainly exhibited at the Okayama Traditional Art and Crafts Exhibition, and his work was also selected for the Japan Traditional Craft Exhibition.  He produced a wide range of tableware, as well as teaware and sake vessels.  His second eldest son, Horikawa Nanzan (b.1961) succeeded the family kiln after the first generation’s passing.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Bizen-ware is generally known for its iron-like hardness, simple unglazed texture, and distinctive markings resulting from wood-burning kiln firing. Because of the clay composition, Bizen pottery is fired slowly over a long period of time. Firings take place only once or twice a year. They require the wood fire to be kept burning for 10-14 days, which involves long hours and tonnes of wood. Bizen clay is dug up from rice fields and this iron rich clay is what gives most Bizen-ware its dark colours, though, a few potters prefer to use lighter mountain clay.
