This listing is for an ichii ittobori natsume tea caddy made around 20 years ago. It has a smooth finish and a fine wood grain. The interior is nice and clean, and it comes with its original paper storage box.
Ichii ittobori refers to a type of ittobori woodcarving that originated in the Hida region in the Southern Alps region of Japan. It was started by a netsuke master carver named Matsuda Sukenaga. It is popular due to its fine grain, and this is because the growth rings of mulberry and yew wood is small. Most ichii ittobori pieces are unpainted and in many cases unlacquered, and this is because craftsmen want to highlight the beautiful grain of the wood. Some of the most beautiful masks in Japan are made using the ichii ittobori technique. This particular type of woodcarving was designated as a traditional craft in 1975.
