This listing is for a beautiful Kyo-ware plate made about 25 years ago by distinguished potter, Ichikawa Kozo.  It is wheel thrown and the front is decorated with two vases and a black pitcher over a soft green background.  The back of the plate is glazed black, and there are two holes allowing the plate to be hung on the wall.  Signed ‘Kozo’, and comes with its original signed wooden storage box.

Ichikawa Kozo (1930-2009) was a prolific Kyo-ware potter who studied under master potter Kusube Yaichi.  In 1952 he was first selected for the prestigious Nitten Exhibition, and in 1955 he won the Governor’s Award at the Kyoto Prefecture Art and Crafts Exhibition (he won this award three times during his career). In 1966 he relocated his kiln to the Yamashina district in Kyoto, and he was invited to become a judge for Nitten.  He won the Mayor Award at the Kyo Exhibition the same year, and another two times following this.  In 1974 he was invited to become a judge at the Kyo Exhibition, and he exhibited overseas at the Canadian International Ceramics Exhibition, and the France International Ceramics Exhibition.  In 1976 he won the Kyo Exhibition Award at the Kyo Exhibition held in Kyoto city, as well as the Chunichi International Ceramic Art Exhibition Award.  In 1977 his work was broadcast on television under the name “Creating Beauty”, and in 1981 he received the Nitten Special Exhibition Award.  In 1985 he was invited to become a judge at the All Kansai Art Exhibition, and in 1992 an article titled “Creating Hakuji” was featured in a Kyoto area journal discussing Ichikawa’s expertise at glazing porcelain.  In 1993 he became a judge for the Nikkokai Exhibition, and in 2000 he received the Minister of Education Award at the Nikkokai Exhibition.  He won the Special Selection Award at the Nitten Exhibition the same year.  Ichikawa was a Nitten Committee member, and he is best known for his Hakuji glazes.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and cannot be used in your own listings.

Kyo-ware originated in the 17th century in Kyoto and features overglaze enamel pigments on a porcelain base. The porcelain base acts as white canvas, allowing for beautiful and superior quality designs to be painted. Kyo-ware artisans traditionally produced chawan and utensils for the tea ceremony, however contemporary potters specialize in tableware, tea ceremony items, incense holders, and okimono. Kyo-ware was designated as a traditional craft in 1977.
