This listing is for an attractive Imbe toushitsu (ceramic lacquer) vase made around 50-60 years ago by Imbe Toushitsu Workshop.  It is shaped like a Chinese moon flask with two small handles on the shoulders.  The photos show the vase under studio lighting and without, the plain grey background is without.  There’s a gold mark on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.

Imbe toushitsu refers to wares produced in Okayama Prefecture using a technique called ‘toushitsu’.  Toushitsu means lacquered pottery, and it involves applying lacquer over a ceramic base and polishing it. Imbe toushitsu pieces use locally sourced clay that’s also used by Imbe and Bizen potters.  This particular type of ware is a unique fusion of pottery and lacquer that is resistant to heat and moisture absorption.  Tsuji Mitsusuke (1915-1992) is probably one of the most well-known toushitsu craftsman, he mainly produced lacquer paintings but he made toushitsu okimono sculptures and figurines as well.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
