This listing is for an imitation Kamakura-bori plate set made around 30 years ago. This set consists of five small plates and a round box for holding sweets.  Each piece is made of synthetic resin, and decorated with chrysanthemums.  Perfect for outdoor dining or picnics, there’s no need to worry about scratches and it’s easy to clean. Please note that this set is not made of wood and not coated in actual urushi lacquer, this is imitation Kamakura-bori lacquerware. The information below is an explanation of the Kamakura-bori style of lacquerware.

The process for making Kamakura-bori lacquerware is a very long and arduous one. First the design is transferred onto the surface, then it is chiselled out resulting in a shallow relief pattern. The remainder of the surface is then carved to create a bumpy textured surface. This is followed by multiple layers of lacquer, the penultimate being black and the final being red. The piece is then polished and receives a final layer of lacquer. The craftsman continues this process until a smooth shiny surface is achieved.
