This listing is for a Shigaraki tea set made around 40-50 years ago by veteran potter, Inada Seizo.  The set consists of a 100ml hobin style teapot, five SMALL 30ml tea cups, and a 100ml yuzamashi.  A lot of people don’t know how to use the yuzamashi, but actually it is an essential item for making good quality tea. Boiled water should be poured into the yuzamashi before going anywhere near the teapot. This allows the water to cool down and become the correct temperature, which is ideally around 80 degrees Celsius.  The hobin is signed and the set comes with its original paper storage box, as well as a Japanese language profile paper.  As you can see from the photos the box is very spotty on the interior, please let us know if you’d prefer not to receive it.

Inada Seizo is a Shigaraki potter and master of Rakutouen Gama.  He was born and raised in Shiga and decided to become a potter after becoming enchanted by Shigaraki’s earthy tones and rustic charm.  He is recognised for his ability to blend traditional techniques with modern designs, and he mainly produces tableware, sake vessels, vases, and teaware.  His work is a combination of glazes and distinctive features like ‘hi-iro’ (fire colour) and ‘koge’ (scorching).  According to Inaba Shigaraki has managed to thrive alongside the changing times, remaining deeply rooted in the aesthetic sensibilities of the Japanese people.  He is committed to preserving tradition while creating pottery that enriches daily lives.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Shigaraki-ware refers to pottery made in Shiga Prefecture. Shigaraki is perhaps one of the more well-known types of stoneware with its origins dating back to the Kamakura period. The Shiga region is home to one of the six oldest kilns in Japan, and this is because of its superb clay. It has a reddish-orange colour, along with a natural ash glaze acquired from the deposit of ashes in the kilns. Pieces of quartz, feldspar or silica can often be found on the surface, giving Shigaraki a wonderful gritty texture and rustic charm. Historically potters produced wares specifically for the tea ceremony, however craftsmen gradually shifted to producing items such as vases and sake bottles as well.
