This listing is for a pair of Tokoname-ware yunomi made around 40 years ago by noted potter Inoue Gisou.  They are wheel-thrown and made of smooth, orange-red ‘shudei’ clay.  The exterior features a simple pattern made with a potter’s knife, and the stamp of the potter can be found near the base.  They come with their original signed wooden storage box, and a Japanese language profile paper about Tokoname-ware.  *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE BAMBOO TEA SCOOP IS NOT INCLUDED.

Inoue Gisou is a Tokoname master potter well-known for his exquisite shudei teaware.  He primarily produces kyusu-style teapots, and his pieces are smooth and unglazed.  Shudei clay contains a lot of iron oxide, and this reacts with the tannin and removes any bitterness resulting in a more mellow flavour.  Unfortunately these days there are few kilns working with pure, unblended shudei clay, and Gisou pieces are becoming rather scarce.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Tokoname-ware refers to stoneware pottery made in Tokoname City in Aichi Prefecture. This type of pottery has been in production for over 1000 years, and originally potters created religious items as well as tea utensils. Tokoname-ware is now more widely known for its pottery using red clay.
