This listing is for a superb hand-painted wooden accessories box made by ‘Some-iro’ dye artist and painter Horie Kinnosuke.  The box is made of cherry wood and the lid is decorated with Ezo Yamazakura cherry blossoms.  This piece is unlacquered and has a beautiful smooth finish.  The signature of the artist can be found under the lid, and it comes with its original paper storage box.  It also comes with a Japanese language profile paper which I have translated below.

Horie Kinnosuke (b. 1919) was a ‘some-iro’ dye artist and painter originally from Kyoto.  He spent much of his life in Aichi Prefecture where he worked at the Nagoya Institute of Technology.  During that time he devoted his time to research and published several books about indigo dye and arabesque patterns.  For many years he studied under Yamato-e painter Yamada Shuso (1889-1968), and he also developed a special purple dye derived from sea shells.  In 1983 he retired from the Nagoya Institute of Technology and began to focus on art projects.  He held exhibitions at Showa Art Museum and Nagoya Mitsukoshi Department Store from 1983-1987, and he also exhibited with members of the Chubu Traditional Dyeing and Weaving Craft Study Group.  In 1987 he painted a splendid ‘some-iro’ version of Hokusai’s Daruma on the wall of Nagoya City Museum to commemorate its 10 year anniversary.  The box in this listing is a fine example of his Yamato-e expertise.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
