This listing is for a thin bamboo calligraphy brush produced for Ishikawa Takenomise.  Both the handle and the tip of the brush are made of bamboo, so the tip is relatively coarse.  A piece of thin bamboo is split up to the front of the knot, and then continuously split until the brush is complete.  Bamboo brushes were traditionally used in the world of zen rather than those made from animals, and produce more of a ‘scratchy’ finish.  **Care instructions:  If it stays wet for a long time (more than a day), mould may appear and the brush will possibly begin to rot.  Also, if it is extremely dry, such as near a heater, it may crack.  After use, remove ink and wipe off any water.  Dry the brush completely before storing it.  *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CLOTH AND CHAWAN ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING.

Ishikawa Takenomise (Ishikawa Bamboo shop) opened in 1935, and consists of skilled artisans specialising in the production of tea utensils and items used for ikebana flower arranging.  Their main store and production area is located in Arashiyama, they also have some smaller stores located in downtown Kyoto city.  They use high quality bamboo which is selected for its colour and flexibility.  They boast over 100 types of products, and it is possible to view the craftsmen at work at their main store in Arashiyama.
