This listing is for a high grade lacquered bamboo chashaku made by Ishikawa Takenomise in Kyoto.  Chashaku are an essential item for traditional Japanese tea ceremony, they are used for the measuring and preparation of matcha tea. The back of the spoon is coated in dark coloured urushi lacquer, and the front is unlacquered with a natural finish.  It comes with a paper storage box.

Ishikawa Takenomise (Ishikawa Bamboo shop) opened in 1935, and consists of skilled artisans specialising in the production of tea utensils and items used for ikebana flower arranging.  Their main store and production area is located in Arashiyama, they also have some smaller stores located in downtown Kyoto city.  They use high quality bamboo which is selected for its colour and flexibility.  They boast over 100 types of products, and it is possible to view the craftsmen at work at their main store in Arashiyama.

Urushi lacquerware refers to products that have been coated in natural lacquer collected from urushi trees. The process for lacquering items is long and very labour intensive, each item requiring multiple layers of lacquer that may take anywhere from six months to two years to complete. Heat and humidity are required to dry lacquer evenly and consistently, so Japan’s rainy season and summer months are ideal for this process. Urushi products are not only beautiful but also strong.
