This listing is for a susutake chashaku, and take-zutsu bamboo chashaku case made by Ishikawa Takenomise in Kyoto.  Chashaku are an essential item for traditional Japanese tea ceremony, they are used for the measuring and preparation of matcha tea. The bamboo used for chashaku gets its name from the colour of bamboo roofing in old thatched-roof minka. Over time, bamboo roofing beams would become darkened due to constant exposure to the fireplace below.  Susutake tea utensils undergo a long curing process, which makes them very tough and durable.  Take (bamboo) zutsu (holder/case) are cylindrical tubes of hollowed out bamboo used for storing chashaku tea scoops.  The case in this listing is made of white bamboo sourced from the Arashiyama district in Kyoto, and the lid is hand carved from cedar.  Take care when opening the case, pull the lid straight and do not twist it as twisting may crack or completely break the wood.  Please note that markings on the exterior will differ from the photos as no two pieces of bamboo are the same.  *THE CHAWAN IS NOT INCLUDED, THIS LISTING IS FOR THE TEA SCOOP AND CASE ONLY.

Ishikawa Takenomise (Ishikawa Bamboo shop) opened in 1935, and consists of skilled artisans specialising in the production of tea utensils and items used for ikebana flower arranging.  Their main store and production area is located in Arashiyama, they also have some smaller stores located in downtown Kyoto city.  They use high quality bamboo which is selected for its colour and flexibility.  They boast over 100 types of products, and it is possible to view the craftsmen at work at their main store in Arashiyama.
