This listing is for a vintage chawan made around 12 years ago by Ishizaki Koshiro. It is made of high-fired stoneware and the front is decorated with a hand-painted depiction of a white snake. White snakes are considered to be good luck in Japan, and are a symbol for Benten, the Japanese goddess of wealth. The piece is thin walled and the rim is trimmed with an iron-based glaze, there’s also a much thicker line brushed onto the interior of the bowl. It was most likely made to commemorate the Year of the Snake back in 2013. The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box. It also comes with a turmeric wrapping cloth for when the item is not in use.
Ishizaki Koshiro (b.1948) is a Nara based potter and current master of Shisui Gama. He was born in Kagoshima in Kyushu and studied under Kyo-ware master potter Ogawa Takeo.
