This listing is for a VERY LARGE Tokoname-ware ikebana suiban made around 30 years ago by Issei-Touen.  A suiban is a type of water basin used for the arrangement of flowers during ikebana.  The suiban in this listing is made of high-fired stoneware coated in celadon-coloured glaze.  It’s ample in size and suitable for both professional and amateur ikebana enthusiasts.  *Green celadon never seems to photograph well, the colour is much nicer in person.

Issei-Touen is a Tokoname-ware kiln located in the Sakaemachi district in Tokoname city, Aichi Prefecture.  Before the war, they were involved in the production of Tokoname crafts under the name Kojiyaki Touen.  After the war ended they changed their name to the current one, and in 2015 they remodelled the premises and opened a studio and workshop for visitors.  The current master is Yagi Takayuki, a young but accomplished potter in Seto.  Issei-Touen has a large wood-fired kiln, as well as gas and electric kilns.  They produce teaware, tableware, vases/suiban, and even large pieces like bath tubs!   **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Tokoname-ware refers to stoneware pottery made in Tokoname City in Aichi Prefecture. This type of pottery has been in production for over 1000 years, and originally potters created religious items as well as tea utensils. Tokoname-ware is now more widely known for its pottery using red clay.
