This listing is for an Iwakuni-ware chawan made around 20 years ago by Yamada Shoto.  It is wheel-thrown and decorated with a hoju wish-fulfilling jewel.  The kanji on the back reads as ‘kotobuki’ and symbolises longevity.  The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.  It also comes with a yellow wrapping cloth for when the item is not in use.  The lid of the box was missing when we received this item, so we had a new one made.  *PLEASE NOT THAT THE BAMBOO CHASHAKU TEA SCOOP IS NOT INCLUDED.

Yamada Shoto is an Iwakuni-ware potter and current master of Kikko Gama.  He established his kiln in 1973, and works alongside his son Tetsuo.  His work was selected for the Kyushu-Yamaguchi Ceramics Exhibition, and he received an award at the 15th Contemporary Art Exhibition.  He was commissioned for projects at the local Citizen’s Hall and Iwakuni Central Library. He has held two solo exhibitions, and produces a wide range of tableware and teaware.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Iwakuni-ware refers to pottery made in the Iwakuni district of Yamaguchi prefecture.  The first kilns were established in the year 1700 after the Kikkawa clan commissioned a potter from Kyoto to produce clan wares.  Over times more kilns opened, however the best clay was yet to be discovered.  In 1971 Yamada Shoto studied the composition of different clays in the local area, and found reserves of good quality clay in the foothills.  He opened his own kiln two years later and has been making pottery ever since.
