This listing is for a commemorative medallion issued by JAMSTEC (the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology).  JAMSTEC is a Japanese national research institute for marine-earth science and technology.  The medallion was issued to coincide with the launch of the Shinkai 6500, a submersible capable of diving 6500 metres and used for deep sea exploration.  The Shinkai 6500 began its mission to study seafloor topography and geology in 1991, making this medal around 33 years old.  It appears to be made of/plated with bronze and comes with a blue keepsake box.
