This listing is for a Joboji lacquerware natsume tea caddy made around 30 years ago.  The interior is black, and the exterior is coated with vermillion coloured lacquer decorated with makie ginkgo leaves, matsuba pine needles, and two ‘tsubo tsubo’ pattern jars.  Usually one tsubo tsubo jar is decorated with shell, but the shell part is missing on this piece.

Joboji lacquerware refers to lacquerware products produced in the Joboji area of Iwate Prefecture in northern Japan.  Joboji lacquer is not well known overseas, but it actually accounts for 60% of Japan’s total lacquerware production.  This particular type of lacquer has been produced since ancient times, and pieces are generally made of wood derived from horse chestnut, cherry and zelkova trees.  It has been used for the restoration of important national cultural buildings such as the Kinkaku-ji Temple in Kyoto, and Chuson-ji Temple in Iwate. Joboji lacquerware pieces are typically black or vermillion, and they have a smooth, non-glossy finish.
