This listing is for a Banko-ware futaoki made around 20 years ago by master potter Kaga Zuizan III. A futaoki functions as a lid rest during the tea ceremony. The lid of the kama is placed on the futaoki when hot water needs to be drawn from the kettle. The bamboo water ladle rests there up until the lid of the kama is removed. The futaoki featured in this listing is decorated with hand-painted irises, and is wheel-thrown using stoneware clay. The stamp of the potter can be found near the base, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.

Kaga Zuizan III (b. Osamu in 1944) is a Banko-ware potter and an Intangible Cultural Property of Mie Prefecture. He was born in Mie and began studying under his grandfather, master potter Kaga Zuizan I, in 1964. In 1982 he succeeded the family kiln and became the third generation master. In 1988 he was certified as an Intangible Cultural Property of Kuwana city in Mie, and in 2001 he became an Intangible Cultural Property of Mie Prefecture in recognition for his akae overglaze techniques. Kaga’s teaware is in high demand amongst collectors and tea enthusiasts, particularly his hand-painted akae pieces. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Banko-ware refers to pottery made in Mie Prefecture. It is characterized by a dark rusty colour and is made by mixing iron-rich clay with yellow clay. The colour variation is due to low oxygen levels and incomplete combustion when firing. Decorations are generally very simple, and done while the clay is still wet. Banko-ware is well-known for its durability and resistance to high temperatures.
