This listing is for a Kamakura-bori incense box made around 20 years ago. The box includes a shallow copper tray for ash and a small compartment for holding joss sticks. The lid is carved with a flower motif and the interior is lacquered black. This item is compact and has had little use, the only part that has obvious wear is the copper tray.
The process for making Kamakura-bori lacquerware is a very long and arduous one. First the design is transferred onto the surface, then it is chiselled out resulting in a shallow relief pattern. The remainder of the surface is then carved to create a bumpy textured surface. This is followed by multiple layers of lacquer, the penultimate being black and the final being red. The piece is then polished and receives a final layer of lacquer. The craftsman continues this process until a smooth shiny surface is achieved.

It’s in very good condition with only very light wear on the box, the part that has obvious use is the copper ashtray.
