This listing is for a vintage futaoki made around 20 years ago by master craftsman, Kanaya Joun.  A futaoki functions as a lid rest during the tea ceremony. The lid of the kama is placed on the futaoki when hot water needs to be drawn from the kettle. The bamboo water ladle rests there up until the lid of the kama is removed. The futaoki featured in this listing is made of copper and moulded to resemble a crab.  It comes with its original signed wooden storage box, as well as a yellow wrapping cloth for when the item is not in use.

Kanaya Joun (b.1933) was born in Takaoka city in Toyama Prefecture.  He apprenticed under master craftsman Hannya Kankei, and has continued to work at Hannya Foundry for over 40 years.  Initially, he was a manufacturer of karakane copper furnaces, but now he produces a range of copper furnaces using various casting methods and techniques.  In 1958, he became a regular member of the Japan Kogei Association and has risen to become a leading figure in the casting industry.  His work is in high demand due to its superior quality, and he has devoted his career to producing tea utensils.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Takaoka city is the leading producer of copperware in all of Japan, its origins going back some 400 years to feudal times. They produce items for religious purposes, the tea ceremony, as well as pots and pans for daily use. Manufacturing involves several stages beginning with the making of moulds in either wax or resin. This is followed by casting via the lost-wax process, and then finishing and colouring. During the colouring process other metals may be added and lacquer is sometimes added to the base. All these processes combined create Japan’s finest copperware, all done by highly skilled master craftsmen.
