This listing is for a small Made in Japan stainless steel grater made by Kankuma. It is moulded to resemble an eggplant, and is intended for grating garlic, radish etc. The beloved eggplant holds special meaning in Japan, it is seen as particularly good luck if your first dream in the New Year includes Mt. Fuji, a hawk, and an eggplant. Also eggplants also happen to be one of Japan’s more popular summer vegetables, and this is because they are believed to have a cooling effect on the body. It has a hole at the top so it can be hung from a hook, and it comes with its original packaging.
Kankuma was established in 1965 in the Tsubame district of Niigata, and is a manufacturer of commercial kitchen supplies. They produce supplies for hotels, restaurants, cafeterias etc., and mainly deal in wholesale. Tsubame is famous for its manufacturing of hand hammered metal crafts and sharp-edged tools for artisans, however in 1945 several factories received an order to make kitchenware for twenty thousand US army personnel stationed in Japan. Leftover scrap metal used to make submarine periscopes was turned into kitchenware, thus marking the beginning of stainless steel kitchenware production in the area. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
