This listing is for a Kyo-ware kohiki chawan made around 20 years ago by noted potter, Kato Fumika.  It is wheel-thrown and coated in light coloured slip over a stoneware base.  Both the interior and exterior features gold enamel brushwork and hand-painted pampas grass gently swaying in the breeze – it’s almost poetic.  The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.  It also comes with a stamped turmeric coloured wrapping cloth for when the item is not in use, as well as a Japanese language profile paper about the potter.

Kato Fumika (b.1953) is a Kyo-ware potter originally from Tottori Prefecture.  In 1974 he began studying at Risho Gama for three years, before moving to Tofuku Gama for the next seven years.  In 1983 he began studying under Yagi Toru, and in 1993 his work was selected for the Kyoto Crafts Exhibition.  His work was also selected for the Kyo and Kiyomizu-ware Exhibition at the Japanese Embassy in Paris, and he received an award at the Kyo and Kiyomizu-ware exhibition in Kyoto.  In 1995 his work was selected for the Kinki Region Japan Art and Crafts Exhibition, as well as the 17th Kyo and Kiyomizu-ware Exhibition.  In 1996 he received the Uji City Mayor Award at the 18th Kyo and Kiyomizu-ware Exhibition, and in 1998 his work was selected for the 16th Tougei Zaidan Exhibition.  He exhibited work at the same exhibition the following year.  Kato primarily produces teaware and is best known for his kohiki slip chawan and kogo.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Kyo-ware originated in the 17th century in Kyoto and features overglaze enamel pigments on a porcelain base. The porcelain base acts as white canvas, allowing for beautiful and superior quality designs to be painted. Kyo-ware artisans traditionally produced chawan and utensils for the tea ceremony, however contemporary potters specialize in tableware, tea ceremony items, incense holders, and okimono. Kyo-ware was designated as a traditional craft in 1977.
