This listing is for a wood-fired chawan made around 20 years ago by noted potter, Kato Shinichi.  It is wheel-thrown and coated in rice husk glaze over a high-fired stoneware base.  It has a nice deep shape for whisking, and the glaze exudes the same kind of warmth that Mashiko pieces are known for.  The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original wooden storage box.  It also comes with a turmeric coloured wrapping cloth for when the item is not in use, as well as a Japanese language profile paper about the potter.

Kato Shinichi (b.1952) is a Tokyo based potter with a kiln located out in west Tokyo.  He graduated from Musashino Art College and began studying at the Tochigi Prefecture Ceramic Technology Institute.  He became a pupil of Mashiko potter Mimura Hokudo and later Shigaraki potter Okano Hosei at Okano’s kiln in Hinode, west Tokyo.  In 1975 his work was selected for the New Traditional Art Exhibition, and in 1981 he built his own kiln in Ome city.  In 1991 he exhibited at the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition and his work was selected for Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition.  In 1992 his work was once again selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, and in 1993 he exhibited at the New Traditional Crafts Exhibition, and at the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition.  In 1995 he gained another selection at the New Traditional Crafts Exhibition as well as the New Traditional Crafts Exhibition.  During this time he received Second Prize at the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition, and the Yamatane Art Museum Award at the New Traditional Crafts Exhibition.   He also exhibited at the Mashiko Ceramics Exhibition, the Shoroku Awards Tea Ceramics Exhibition and the Ceramic Art Exhibition.  He is a full-time member of the Japan Crafts Association and the Totokai Eastern Ceramic Association.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
