This listing is for a Mino-ware chawan made around 30 years ago by Kato Shouzan.  It is wheel-thrown and the front is decorated with a lovely hina matsuri design. Hina matsuri refers to a March 3rd celebration where people pray for the health and happiness of their girls. Families display dolls and eat food such as hina arare. The bowl in this listing is decorated with an emperor and empress doll and peach blossoms. The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original paper storage box dated January Heisei 7 (1995).

Kato Shouzan (born Yoshimasa) is a Mino-ware potter and current master of Genpei Gama.  Genpei Gama was established over 100 years ago in Mino province by Kato Jotaro.  Jotaro studied in Kyoto and then returned to Mino where he opened a kiln specialising in overglaze enamel teaware.  Mino kilns generally producing Shino and Oribe glazed pieces, however Jotaro and later generations continued to produce Kyo-ware style pieces.  Genpei Gama specialises in Ninsei style teaware using techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation.  Shouzan is continuing this tradition alongside his brother Kato Ryuzan (born Takaaki).  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Mino-ware refers to pottery produced in what was formerly the old Mino Province. Early examples of Mino-ware were predominantly ash-glazed stoneware pieces. Later however the use of the potter’s wheel, as well as a greater variety of glazes, began to characterize what is often thought to ideally represent Mino pottery today. Larger production kilns like Kozangama in Gifu Prefecture produce wares similar to Imari and Arita-ware. Various other kilns specialize in producing budget priced tableware, along with high end wares for various brand name stores and franchises around the country such as Tachikichi in Kyoto.
