This listing is for a small Mino-ware hanging vase made around 20-30 years ago by noted potter, Kato Takeshi.  It is wheel-thrown and has a hook on the back allowing it to be hung on the wall, and it’s coated in natural ash glaze. This little gem has an ‘uzukumaru’ shape, which means dented or hunched over. The opening is wide enough to accommodate a decent sized bunch of short stemmed flowers, and the signature of the potter can be found on the bottom.  It comes with its original signed wooden storage box, as well as a yellow wrapping cloth for when the item is not in use.  It also comes with a Japanese language profile paper about the potter.

Kato Takeshi (b.1947) is a Mino-ware potter who works out of Genkuro Gama located in Gifu Prefecture.  He studied under several mentors: Oohashi Momonosuke, Kobayashi Bunichi, Chikada Seiji, and finally in 1971 under master potter, Uchida Kunio in Kyoto.  After returning from Kyoto he opened Genkuro Gama in 1973. He began studying techniques for using Shino and Oribe glazes, and held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 1977.  He built an anagama tunnel kiln in 1983 and has continued to exhibit nationwide on a regular basis.  He is best known for his exquisite Shino glazes, as well as his contemporary style tea ware.    **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Mino-ware refers to pottery produced in what was formerly the old Mino Province. Early examples of Mino-ware were predominantly ash-glazed stoneware pieces. Later however the use of the potter’s wheel, as well as a greater variety of glazes, began to characterize what is often thought to ideally represent Mino pottery today. Larger production kilns like Kozangama in Gifu Prefecture produce wares similar to Imari and Arita-ware. Various other kilns specialize in producing budget priced tableware, along with high end wares for various brand name stores and franchises around the country such as Tachikichi in Kyoto.
