This listing is for a Kiyomizu-ware chawan made around 20-30 years ago by noted potter, Katsumi Kozan III.  It is wheel-thrown and decorated with yellow coloured slip over a khaki coloured base.  This piece is made of high-fired stoneware and has a nice deep shape for whisking.  The signature of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.  It also comes with a Japanese language profile paper about the potter.  *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHASHAKU TEA SCOOP IS NOT INCLUDED.

Katsumi Kozan III (b.1934) is a Kiyomizu-ware potter and he was born as the eldest son of the second generation master of the family kiln. The kiln was established by the first generation in Gojozaka, Kyoto in 1899.  In 1970 the second generation passed away and he moved the kiln to the pottery district in Yamashina.  He inherited traditional techniques for creating porcelain pieces that mimic cloisonné.  In 1974 he began to refine these traditional techniques and created a new method for creating enamel wares that are more elegant and refined in style.  In 1982 a cloisonné style chawan received the Mayor Award at the Kyo and Kiyomizu Exhibition.  Such chawan typically sell for over 100,000 yen and are highly sought after by collectors.  Kozan mainly produces teaware, but he also produces bonsai pots using the cloisonné enamel technique.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Kiyomizu-ware refers to a type or variation of Kyo-ware. Nonomura Ninsei is regarded as one of the key figures responsible for the development of the beautiful Kiyomizu-ware style that we know today. He produced tea utensils and mastered the secret technique for hand-painting overglaze enamels to look like brocade. This technique is very highly regarded and ranks up there with the finest Kutani-ware and Imari.
